Who, Why, & How

My name is David Labbe, founder of Forage for Change, and a Mainer who has spent his adult life in kitchens, cooking for friends, and working professionally in food manufacturing and food safety. In fact, most of my relationships have been rooted in food; from growing up helping my Mom in the kitchen, to watching in amazement as my Grandmother picked dandelion greens from the backyard for lunch; I didn’t realize this until much later in life, but food has played an integral role in shaping who I am today.

Learning and teaching about wild food has become one of the great joys in my life. It’s my belief that we all have the inherent desire to be closer to the land, whether you want to locate an abandoned apple tree for a yearly harvest, or you want to gather as many calories off of your landscape as possible, please consider joining me on this journey of remembering our ancient food-ways.

By no means an expert on wild food or botany, I do have many years practicing careful, thoughtful, and sustainable harvesting of wild foods and always approach my teaching with safety, respect, and reverence in mind. My goal is to ensure that participants leave my classes with foundational foraging skills and feeling confident they can safely interact with wild food on their own.

the good life

How I became obsessed with wild-food is a longer story for another time, but I can best describe my connection to this practice as one that has all the elements of a good life; clean and exciting food, a connection to nature, adventure, exercise, friendship, spirituality, and morality.
